“I hate it here so I will go to secret gardens in my mind… no mid-sized city hopes and small town fears. I’m there most of the year ‘cause I hate it here.” – Taylor Swift, “I Hate it Here”

On Brooke Castillo’s podcast, The Life Coach School, she shared the thought “it doesn’t get better than this”.

I get where Brooke was coming from.

She was talking about how we’re always chasing happiness and how we think it’ll come when we buy the bigger house, get married, lose the weight, or achieve whatever goal we’re working toward.

As Brooke says, life will be always be 50/50 (no matter what your circumstances look like)…half amazing and half awful. That’s how the world works.

I understand why Brooke would say it doesn’t get any better than this, but I disagree.

As a Christian, I believe that there will come a day when we will live forever…and life will no longer be 50/50.

There will be a time without heartbreak, without grief, without chronic pain, without fear, without mental illness, without dementia, without cancer…without bodies that get sick, wear down, and eventually die.

It gives me so much peace to know that this is NOT as good as it gets.

Again, I get Brooke’s point.

We can choose to be happy now in the present moment instead of chasing after happiness by checking another box off of a never ending list of accomplishments.

…AND…

We can find peace in knowing that the challenges we experience here are not going to last forever.

This is NOT as good as it gets.

Thank God for that.
