I became a Christian a few years ago, but it wasn’t until recently that I really felt like a Christian.

Why?

The answer is simple.  I’ve been focusing my mind on “things above”.  This comes from Colossians 3:2 “Set your minds on things above, not earthly things.”

There are a number of different tools you can use to train your mind to think about things above.

Here are 10 options!

  1.  Listen to Christian podcasts.  I like to do this while I’m walking on the treadmill.  My favorites include Things Above, Proverbs 31 Ministries, Elevation Church, and The Next Right Thing.
  2. Make going to church a mandatory event every Sunday…not just something that you do once in a while.  Create a habit.
  3. Read the Bible consistently.  If you feel like you don’t have time, start small.  Try 10 minutes per day or an hour per week.
  4. Attend a class at church, a Bible study, or a “small group”.  I’m fortunate to attend a large church that offers a wide variety of classes, but if you go to a smaller church and don’t have a lot of options, try an online course or Bible study instead.  There are plenty of those!
  5. Listen to Christian music.  This may seem insignificant, but never underestimate the power of uplifting songs.  There are a number of Bible verses about the importance of music as a form of worship.
  6. Be intentional about prayer.  Use a prayer list, start a prayer journal, or pray at a set time.  Find what works best for you!
  7. Be generous.  Volunteer for your local church; serve others; be generous with your time, money, and other resources.
  8. Be kind to others (even when it’s difficult).  “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.” (Galatians 5:22)
  9. Confess and forgive.  No matter how hard we try to be kind and loving toward other people, we all fall short.  None of us are perfect.  Confess your sins to God and to each other.  Forgive others as God forgives you.(Colossians 3:13).
  10. See the opportunity.  Every time you encounter a difficult person or a challenging situation in life, remember that this is an opportunity to grow in faith and love.  See it as a chance to grow into the person God wants you to be…instead of complaining about how you wish things (or people) were different.
